THE "CASA VEGETARIANA"
A simple vegetarian cuisine for grandparents, grandchildren, vegetarians, and non-vegetarians alike - for all tastes. A safe haven for those who prefer classic dishes and an adventure for those eager to explore more creative combinations. Through the magic of fire, we awaken new flavours and revive others that linger fondly in our memories, transporting us to the comfort of times past.
Fruits, mushrooms, vegetables, aromatic herbs, olive oil, spices, cheeses, and other ingredients are supplied directly by local sellers and producers from our neighbours at Bolhão Market. This close relationship and emotional connection translates into exceptional product quality, noticeable in everything that comes from our kitchen.
Returning to our roots, we discovered a Porto with a vibrant vegetarian heritage. We have reinvented it at Casa Vegetariana.
Those who visit us ensure it continues thriving into the future.

TASTE JOURNEY
At Casa Vegetariana, we celebrate vegetarianism in a lighthearted and relaxed manner, without dogmatism or prejudice, offering dishes prepared with dedication and authenticity in a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. Our recipes range from simple to sophisticated, inspired by international classics yet adapted to our local ingredients, tastes, and culture. Everything here is handmade - from sauces and pasta to side dishes - ensuring quality, freshness, and a distinctive identity.
The smoky flavour reconnects us to our origins, and our memory reconnects us to tradition. Fire is the soul of our cuisine, bringing aromas and flavours that evoke cherished memories and tie us deeply to our roots.

A PORTO WITH A VIBRANT VEGETARIAN PAST
In 1909, the monthly magazine "O Vegetariano" was launched. In 1911, the Portuguese Vegetarian Society was founded. By 1913, Porto had opened the Vegetarian Hotel - Naturist Guesthouse, the Fruti-Vegetariano Restaurant, and Padaria Cunha bakery. In 1916, Julieta Ribeiro published Portugal's first vegetarian cookbook.
At Casa Vegetariana, we wish to honour this pioneering spirit, continuing and promoting its coherence, educational intent, ease of accessibility, improvement of life quality, and above all, its sense of CARE. The Portuguese Vegetarian Society and the magazine "O Vegetariano" created an inclusive community comprising subscribers, doctors, athletes, shoemakers, shops, dressmakers, and more. Julieta Ribeiro's book, aside from recipes, taught women how vegetarian cuisine could facilitate and improve their daily lives and relationships - truly innovative for the time.
Inspired by these pioneers, we want to show that excellent vegetarian dishes can be created with minimal seasoning and complications, using few ingredients, without compromising quality and taste. The secret is not complexity but the care put into each stage of preparation. Our menu is structured according to the sequence of a traditional Portuguese meal: starters, soup, main dishes, and dessert. Eating vegetarian does not require changing our Portuguese way of dining.
By focusing our purchases at the Market, we not only create synergies with local vendors but also help food play an active role in the city's dynamic and preservation of its historical culture.

LET'S ALL BE HAPPY
Throughout art history, countless artists have employed anthropomorphism as a symbolic or metaphorical vehicle to express a critical intent with humor and irony. We have hung original antique grocery cabinets from the ceiling, creating a link to the utopian vision associated with early vegetarian movements. We have repurposed these cabinets, enhancing their value by transforming them into illuminated frames displaying historical illustrations.
Humor is essential for approaching life lightly. Not taking everything too seriously allows us to handle situations with greater clarity, assertiveness, and less stress. Laughing at our own mistakes reduces anxiety, improves relationships, and boosts confidence in our decisions. Allowing humor to permeate our daily lives makes room for a happier, more balanced, and authentic existence. Join us in this spirit!
